Exciters and enhancers are used for changing tone quality of the sound. However, unlike an equalizer that just amplifies or mutes a frequency that is already present in a signal, enhancers can create new harmonics. A passive frequency filter is used for correcting amplitude-frequency characteristics and giving a desired tonality to the sound.
